For what reason is FGM performed?
Psychosexual reasons: FGM is carried out as a way to control women’s sexuality, which is sometimes said to be insatiable if parts of the genitalia, especially the clitoris, are not removed. It is thought to ensure virginity before marriage and fidelity afterward, and to increase male sexual pleasure.
What is the difference between circumcision and FGM?
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a procedure where the female genitals are deliberately cut, injured or changed, but there’s no medical reason for this to be done. It’s also known as female circumcision or cutting, and by other terms, such as sunna, gudniin, halalays, tahur, megrez and khitan, among others.

Is FGM done in hospitals?
Most commonly, FGM/C is carried out by traditional practitioners. In recent years, however, we have seen a trend moving it away from villages and homes, where it has usually been done, and into hospitals, clinics, and private offices.
Why do guys get their foreskin removed?
Sometimes there’s a medical need for circumcision, such as when the foreskin is too tight to be pulled back (retracted) over the glans. In other cases, particularly in parts of Africa, circumcision is recommended for older boys or men to reduce the risk of certain sexually transmitted infections.
What age should FGM be taught?
