Blood Inheritance Just like eye or hair color, our blood type is inherited from our parents. Each biological parent donates one of two ABO genes to their child. The A and B genes are dominant and the O gene is recessive. For example, if an O gene is paired with an A gene, the blood type will be A.
How do you calculate blood type?
The test to determine your blood group is called ABO typing. Your blood sample is mixed with antibodies against type A and B blood. Then, the sample is checked to see whether or not the blood cells stick together. If blood cells stick together, it means the blood reacted with one of the antibodies.
What does A+ and B make?
One parent with A and another with B will give their child either A, B, AB or O groups. One parent with A and another with AB will give their child either A, B or AB groups. One parent with A and another with O will give their child either A or O blood group.
Does a child always have the same blood type as his mother?
While a child could have the same blood type as one of his/her parents, it doesn’t always happen that way. For example, parents with AB and O blood types can either have children with blood type A or blood type B. These two types are definitely different than parents’ blood types!

In at-home blood typing tests, they typically ask that you prick your finger with a lancet and put drops of your blood on a special card. After putting the blood on the card, you can observe the areas where blood clumps or spreads out, and then match those reactions to an included guide.
