What is UbD template?
Understanding By Design, or UBD, is a framework and accompanying design process for thinking decisively about unit lesson planning. The concept was developed by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins, and as part of their principles they state that UBD “…is not a philosophy of education”.
What are some of the disadvantages of UbD?
With reflective thinking and self-awareness at its heart, UbD is very subjective in nature. Difficulty can arise when assessing students on their thoughts and feelings toward a topic. UbD also requires extensive professional development before its implementation which costs in terms of time and money.
What are some of the disadvantage of UbD?
What are the 3 characteristics of OBE?
It is a combination of three types of competence: • practical: knowing how to do things, ability to make decisions • fundamental: understanding what you are doing and why • reflective: learn and adapt through self-reflection; apply knowledge appropriately and responsibly.
Is OBE a curriculum?
In OBE the curriculum is carefully constructed by first determining the outcomes, then designed backwards by: carefully determining authentic assessments (how will we know?) choosing/building relevant learning activities and experiences. selecting appropriate content.
Why is UbD important?
The UbD framework helps to focus curriculum and teaching on the development and deepening of student understand- ing and transfer of learning (i.e., the ability to effectively use content knowledge and skill).
Is backwards planning effective?
Therefore, backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses. Once the learning goals, or desired results, have been identified, instructors will have an easier time developing assessments and instruction around grounded learning outcomes.
Is UDL the same as Understanding by Design?
UDL is often confused with Differentiated Instruction (DI) and Understanding by Design (UbD). They are all similar but they are different. UDL is all about students being able to self differentiate based upon the options and choices that the teacher provides.
Why is UbD referred to as a backward design?
It’s called backward because it starts with the end (i.e. objectives) in mind and works backward from there.
What are the disadvantages of OBE?
Criticism of Outcome-based Education
- Opposition to testing. Critics claim that existing tests do not adequately measure student mastery of the stated objectives.
- Inappropriate outcomes.
- Lack of evidence that OBE actually works.
- Extra burden on instructors and educational institutions.
- Dislike of something that is not OBE.
What are the 3 stages of backward design?
18) structured backward design in three sequential stages: (1) Identify desired results, (2) determine acceptable evidence, and (3) plan learning experiences and instruction.
What are the weaknesses of Understanding by Design model?
What is the difference between UbD and UDL?
UDL is all about students being able to self differentiate based upon the options and choices that the teacher provides. DI is based upon the teacher creating instruction based upon the teacher’s assessment of student need. UbD is the design of education based upon the final outcome.
What is the understanding by design template?
This asset provides a template for planning lessons using Understanding by Design. What is Understanding by Design? Based on the book Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, the concept of Understanding by Design is a planning tool that encourages teachers to begin the planning process by considering what students need to learn.

Is there a template with descriptions of each section of design?
The template walks individuals through the stages of backward design. However, if you are need of the template with descriptions of each section, please see the table below. There is also a link to the document containing the template with descriptions provided below and can be downloaded for free.
