What is the difference between Silpoly and Silnylon?
As you may have guessed from their names, silpoly is made from silicone-coated polyester while silnylon is made from silicone coated nylon. These materials are then woven to form a tarp. Although polyester is less stretchy, heavier and less durable than nylon, it is naturally more waterproof.
Does SilNylon wet out?
“No, silnylon does not ‘wet out and become soaked’ in the way other fabrics do. Think of it as a thin sheet of reinforced silicone rubber. The surface may look wet afterwards, but just give it a good shake.”
How long does Silpoly last?
It will need to be replaced every 3-5 years. At the cost of a couple tenths of an oz to recoat SilNylon, it will be durable for ten years or more. UV damage may be a concern. Generally, SilNylon will eventually die due to this.

Tarps made mostly of polyethylene are more durable, stronger, and have a more waterproof ability as compared to other types of material like canvas. Nylon ground covers and polyethylene mesh tarps are more lightweight and allow shade from the sun while still being breathable.

Can you wash SilNylon?
No worries. Cool/lukewarm water, mild detergent or buy Techwash (I wouldn’t bother). Go easy on the scrubbing and hang it to dry– completely. No hot water or dryers and the more you keep it out of direct sunlight, the longer it will last.
Is Silpoly waterproof?
This fabric is coated with a silicone/PU layer on each side and is waterproof/non-breathable. In addition to excellent waterproof/windproof characteristics, Silpoly offers lower water absorption and increased UV resistance compared to Silnylon.

How do you cut a Silnylon?
Any good sharp scissors will work fine. Yes, don’t cut, just ‘slice’ the scissors through the fabric. Yes, keep your fabric scissors just for fabric.
What needle do you use for ripstop nylon?
size 70/10 needle
Round, ballpoint needles don’t handle this lightweight fabric well, and the best style of needle to use when sewing ripstop nylon is a sharp, pointed needle. Use a universal, size 70/10 needle when sewing ripstop nylon.
Is nylon ripstop fabric waterproof?
