What is an NIH K99?
The K99/R00 program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding physician-scientists from mentored, research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions, and to provide independent NIH research support during the transition.
What is the difference between a K22 and a K99?
A: The NLM K22 award is an unmentored award to support an early career informatics researcher transitioning to an independent position. The K99/R00 award is a two-phase award, with a mentored K99 phase (1–2 years), and then transitioning to an independent R00 phase (1–3 years).
How does a K99 work?
The initial, or mentored phase (K99) provides 1-2 years of mentored support to promising postdoctoral research scientists. The K99 phase is followed by up to 3 years of independent support (R00) contingent on the scientist securing an independent research position.
When should you apply for a K99?
You will need to apply way earlier than you think you do. Don’t let it sneak up on you. Currently the NIH allows one initial submission and one resubmission, and both have to be done before you’ve had 4 years of postdoctoral experience. Most institutes are now counting that 4 years from the date your Ph.
