A foreign exchange student is usually a high school or college student who travels to a foreign country to live and study abroad, as part of a foreign exchange student program. Exchange students will attend classes at a local high school or university, usually as part of their current course of study.

How old do you have to be to host a foreign exchange student?

These requirements apply to host parents or any adult 18 years and older responsible for the direct care, well-being and/or supervision of a minor exchange student.
Can I pick my exchange student?
Can I select the exchange student I want to bring into my home? Yes, our exchange coordinators and full-time staff will work with you to find a great student match. We have spent more than 40 years matching students to their American host families and high schools.
What can foreign exchange students not do?
The student is not allowed to make “life changing” while on the ISE program. This would include but not be limited to: marriage, pregnancy, body piercing, tattoos, etc. Students are required to participate in 5 hours of community service during their program.
