Does a drop shot rig work for trout?
Drop shotting allows you to get the best of both worlds, a real-life trout bait and a trout lure. Dropshotting allows you to present a worm at a predetermined depth, while we have to impart the action into a soft plastic lure or mice tail. You can have a more relaxed approach to dropshotting with worms.
Where do you put weight on a nymph rig?
If you could look under the water as the rig is drifting, the weights would drop down at or near the bottom, and the flies will trail behind in a similar position in the water column. Since you’re trying to mimic natural bugs on the bottom, weight added above the flies is the perfect spot to get your flies down!
What length should a dropper be?
around 6-8 inches
A good general rule of thumb is to hang a dropper from around 6-8 inches or so. Any shorter, and your fly won’t drift properly. Too long, and you risk getting tangled.
Can you drop shot for lake trout?

Take the tag end of the line, pass it down and through the hook eye, and pull the end of the line tight. This will ensure that the hook stands out perpendicular from your line, which is the key to tying the drop-shot rig. Then, tie on your weight using a simple overhand or clinch knot.
How far should split shot be from fly?

How long should a dropper rig be?
Between 5 and 6 feet is ideal unless you’re in an area with extremely spooky fish or in crystal clear flat water. Having the shorter leader will make things a bit easier to cast and you also have to keep in mind the additional length from your dropper. Adding a dropper fly is rather easy.
