How do you install the Fel-Pro 2 rear main seal?

  1. Do not soak the rope seal in oil or any liquid. Hand fit the rope in the groove of the block and rear main bearing cap.
  2. Trim the rope so it’s flush with the rear main cap and block.
  3. Apply a tiny dab (1/8″ or smaller) of RTV to the RMB cap rope seal ends. Apply manufacturer’s recommended sealer to the rear main cap.

Do you install a rear main seal dry?

Some rear main seals need to be installed dry. These seals have a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating on the lip seal that needs to be dry and seat to a dry surface on the crankshaft. The seal will transfer a layer of PTFE to the crankshaft surfaces that the lip will ride on.

The most common cause of rear seal leaks is age and/or high mileage. The seal can also leak due to the vehicle being stored for an extended period of time, or from running the engine low on oil. This causes drying and hardening of the seal leading to shrinking, cracking and tearing of the rear main seal.
