Do I need to tighten header bolts?
No. torqueing a bolt stretches it and helps keeo it tight. headers are exposed to high heating and eventual cooling. if you tighten a bolt too much it loses its elasticity and won’t hold.
Do you use Loctite on header bolts?
NO! Do not put red Loctite on your header bolts! Bad deal all around! Depending on the gaskets you used, you may have to tighten them numerous times as the gasket takes a set.
Can I reuse my header bolts?
The stock header bolts can be reused many times. As long as the threads look good and your not wanting to spend the coin on new ones go for it.
Should you use anti seize on header bolts?
If you are reusing exhaust manifold bolts (which we don’t recommend), apply a metal fortified anti-seize to your manifold bolts. If you’ve just removed the broken bolts and ready to complete the repair, chase the threads clean and use fresh OEM bolts for best results.
Should anti Seize be used on header bolts?
You should use anti-seize on all the bolts on your exhaust system, intake manifold, and any steel bolts that join aluminum or another metal different from the bolt. It is recommended to apply anti seize to any bolts prone to seizing.
Should you put anything on exhaust manifold bolts?
Should I use Loctite on exhaust bolts?
I have always used loctite nickel antisieze on the exhaust manifold socket head bolts together with a lock washer. Never had a probelm with them coming loose. However I check the bolt tightness after the first few weeks of use as the gaskets can compress over time with heat cycles. You could use a loctite.
Should you Loctite exhaust manifold bolts?
Loctite is not recommended for exhaust manifold bolts because it may lose its effectiveness when heated, and will make it too difficult to remove the bolts in the future. You should apply Anti-seize to manifold bolts in order to prevent them from seizing, and from corrosion.
Should I use anti seize on header bolts?
What happens if head bolts are not tight enough?
Uneven loading created by unevenly tightened head bolts can distort the head. Over a period of time, this may cause the head to take a permanent set. So any head that has not been properly torqued should be checked for flatness prior to installing a new head gasket.
Can I reuse exhaust manifold bolts?
You could reuse them, if you think they look good, but your chances of one breaking later have gone up now. I replace them every time, just heat the area around the studs, and melt a candle or crayon into the threads, let cool, they should come out easy, may need to heat again.
