What does ICMP 1 mean?
The second byte called code specifies what kind of ICMP message it is. For example, the destination unreachable message has 16 different codes. When you see code 0 it means that the destination network was unreachable while code 1 means that the destination host was unreachable.
What is ICMP type for ping?
Many of the type fields contain more specific information about the error condition. Table 3.2 lists the ICMP message types….Table 3.2 ICMP Message Types.

Is ICMP an IP protocol?
ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is located at the Network layer of the OSI model (or just above it in the Internet layer, as some argue), and is an integral part of the Internet Protocol suite ( commonly referred to as TCP/IP). ICMP is assigned Protocol Number 1 in the IP suite according to IANA.org.
Is ICMP a TCP or UDP protocol?
ICMP is a network-layer protocol. There is no TCP or UDP port number associated with ICMP packets as these numbers are associated with the transport layer above.
Is ICMP part of TCP?
Unlike the Internet Protocol (IP), ICMP is not associated with a transport layer protocol such as TCP or UDP. This makes ICMP a connectionless protocol: one device does not need to open a connection with another device before sending an ICMP message.
Does IP include ICMP?
ICMP uses the basic support of IP as if it were a higher-level protocol, however, ICMP is actually an integral part of IP. Although ICMP messages are contained within standard IP packets, ICMP messages are usually processed as a special case, distinguished from normal IP processing.
