What is OSCE psychiatry?
The Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is a practical clinical exam. It is a summative assessment of the RANZCP Fellowship Program. The exam assesses clinical competencies across a range of psychiatric practice areas. The exam is set at the standard expected at the end of Stage 3 of the training program.
How long does it take to prepare for OSCE?
3-6 months
For more comprehensive undergraduate OSCEs, 3-6 months of preparation may be needed, depending on the amount of content that needs to be covered. For postgraduate and licensing exams, you will need to begin preparing 1 year in advance, due to the amount of content that you must know.
How do you present a psychiatric history?
The history should be given, as much as possible, in the patient’s own words. Do not use jargon unless the patient does! You can show off your knowledge of how to label symptoms accurately when presenting the Mental State. If the patient experiences auditory hallucinations, give a verbatim quote of what is heard.
