Why are agouti hunted?
All agouti species are intensively hunted because their flesh is prized as food by indigenous peoples. Agoutis are found from southern Mexico southward to Ecuador and east of the Andes throughout the Amazon River basin.
What can agoutis eat?
Red-rumped agoutis eat Brazil nuts. When food is abundant, agoutis will bury these nuts to dig up later when food becomes scarce. With this behavior, they are critically important to the dispersal of Brazil nut seeds. In addition to Brazil nuts, agoutis will consume other seeds, fruits, roots and leaves.
Is an agouti a rat?
The Agouti rat has the distinction of being the first “pet” rat. Because it is the natural color of wild rats, the first person to catch and tame a rat most likely had an Agouti. Rodents that rock. The agouti (ah GOO tee) is a rodent from Central and South America rainforests that looks a bit like a really large guinea pig. Its coarse hair is covered with an oily (and stinky!) substance that acts like a raincoat.

Fallen fruit is the agouti’s favorite food, with nuts a close second. Its sensitive ears can even hear when the fruit hits the ground!
