What is a heart artery dissection?
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection — sometimes referred to as SCAD — is an emergency condition that occurs when a tear forms in a blood vessel in the heart. SCAD can slow or block blood flow to the heart, causing a heart attack, heart rhythm problems (arrythmias) or sudden death.
What causes artery dissection?
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) happens when layers in the artery wall tear apart without warning, and partially or completely block blood flow to the heart. This condition typically presents as a heart attack and is often misdiagnosed.
Is an aortic dissection A SCAD?
Aortic dissection and SCAD share common aetiologies such as a fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), Marfan, Ehlers Danlos, and more rarely systemic lupus erythematosus and Loeys-Dietz; however, SCAD has never been known to have a familial association with aortic dissection.
How do you fix a coronary artery dissection?
Treatment. The goal of treatment for SCAD is to restore blood flow to the heart, manage chest pain and prevent recurrence. Sometimes, this healing will occur naturally. Or doctors might have to restore blood flow by opening the artery with a balloon or stent.
How do you identify a coronary artery dissection?
The symptoms are the same as for a heart attack, so the condition is usually diagnosed through having blood tests, an ECG and a coronary angiogram.
How is an artery dissection treated?
How common is artery dissection?
The annual incidence of symptomatic spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection is 2.5-3 per 100,000. The incidence of carotid artery dissection as a result of blunt injuries (mainly high-speed motor vehicle accidents) ranges from less than 1% to 3%.
How is coronary artery dissection treated?
Is SCAD curable?
SCAD is diagnosed using coronary angiography, and can often be treated medically, using drugs to manage the pain and facilitate the natural healing of the artery. There is some evidence showing that the majority of dissected segments will heal spontaneously with just supportive medical care.
What is the survival rate for SCAD?
Initial reviews of SCAD reported a mortality rate of 70% (11). More recently, the outcome of SCAD has been reported to be more favourable (6,12), with one review suggesting a survival rate of 82% (8).
How do you treat an artery dissection?
Treatment is usually with blood thinners such as warfarin or low molecular weight heparin for 3 to 6 months followed by aspirin therapy.
Can high blood pressure cause carotid artery dissection?
If you have a family member who had an artery dissection, you may be more at risk. Other things that may increase your risk include: Infection. High blood pressure.
Can coughing cause carotid dissection?
Coughing due to respiratory tract infections may lead to internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection.
