What does a spotted boxfish eat?
The yellow boxfish’s diet consists mainly of marine algae, but it may also feed on worms, sponges, crustaceans, molluscs, and small fish. When stressed or injured it releases the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) from its skin, which may prove lethal to fish in surrounding waters.

What can I Feed my boxfish?
Most boxfish will arrive in relatively poor health and be unwilling to eat just about any food you feed them. The most enticing foods are live baby brine shrimp or ghost shrimp. Large ghost shrimp can be too quick to be caught and may need to have their tails cut to slow them down.
What should I do if my boxfish has released toxins?
If the Spotted Boxfish releases its toxins the owner has a very short window in which they can remove fish from the tank and place them into a hospital tank before they die. Once in the hospital tank the water should be changed frequently and treated with carbon to help reduce the effects of the neurotoxins.

The Spotted Boxfish should be kept in tanks with large spaces between rocks or large caverns that they can fit in and turn around without difficulty. Overhangs are also popular places for them to hang around. Large flat rocks at the top of the tank give them a good area to scrape off growing algae.
