In 1615, the canal project was completed and named Dotonbori to praise Mr. Douton’s merits after his death. Douton was taken from his name, and “bori” (from “hori”) means “moat” or “canal”. Afterwards, the Edo shogunate government ruled over Osaka and began urban development.
