Shaftwalls in elevators and stairwells are one of the most important wall assemblies in a building. They provide the only means of evacuation from the building in an emergency. Vertical chases and mechanical enclosures keep vital communication, power, water, fresh air and exhaust systems intact when a fire occurs.

What is a Shaftliner?
eXP® Shaftliner is a moisture and mold-resistant shaftliner panel with a fire-resistant (Type X) core. Use eXP Shaftliner Panels to construct lightweight fire barriers for cavity shaftwalls (1-4 hr.), stairwells and area separation fire walls in multi-family housing.
What are elevator shaft walls made of?

Do elevator shafts have to be concrete?
A traditional elevator shaft is constructed with either CMU (concrete masonry units) or poured in place concrete. This process is slow, dirty, labor intensive work. It takes a full crew of men, working several weeks to complete even a single 3 to 4 story elevator shaft.
Do shaft walls need to be fire rated?
As noted above, per IBC Section 713. 4, shaft enclosures are required to have a fire-resistance rating of not less than 2 hours when connecting four or more stories. A fire-resistance rating of not less than 1 hour is required for shaft enclosures connecting less than four stories.
