Gatton existed as far back as Saxon times There has been a house at Gatton Park since 1086 when it was owned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother of William the Conquerer. The original building was an important manor house in 1220 and was also recorded as having a deer park in 1278.

When was Gatton Hall built?
The original building was an important manor house in 1220 and was also recorded as having a deer park in 1278. Known as Gatton Place, John Aubrey, writing in the ‘History and Antiquities of Surrey’ (Volume iv, pg 217), remarked that there was fine manor house there.

Dogs are welcome but please keep them on leads at all times as livestock are grazing. Benches and a grass picnic area with views of the parkland are on the parterre outside Gatton Hall. Further benches are dotted around the park and gardens. There are great open spaces for family enjoyment.
